Around 400,000 live in ‘white squatter camps’ in South Africa

These white South African families are so impoverished that they are forced to live in conditions reminiscent of the worst days of Apartheid. In these 'white squatter camps,' hundreds of families endure life without power, adequate food, or water, and reside in makeshift shelters. Such townships, found throughout South Africa, are a direct consequence of the poverty that has afflicted many white South Africans since the end of Apartheid 22 years ago.

During the Apartheid era, Afrikaners were assured employment and housing, but in the current economic landscape, many live in dire circumstances. The lack of opportunities for Afrikaners has led to widespread homelessness and poverty. Estimates suggest that up to 400,000 Afrikaners reside in white squatter camps across the country, with nearly 450,000 living on less than £28.99 a month.

Photos featured in culture magazine ‘Union Magazine’ highlight the conditions at Munsieville, a deprived white squatter camp near Johannesburg. This illegal township, built on a former refuse dump, houses around 300 Afrikaners, including many children. The site lacks basic amenities such as electricity and running water, with residents relying on a few standpipes for water. Homes range from wooden sheds to metal shacks, with bare earth floors often exposed by flooding.

Residents of Munsieville face numerous hardships. The lack of electricity and water bills makes it impossible to claim welfare benefits. Hospitals often refuse to treat residents, and potential employers reject them upon learning of their living situation. Henrik, 49, expresses a sense of hopelessness, stating that his age prevents him from securing a job, forcing him to scrape by through collecting scrap metal and selling second-hand clothes.

Leigh Du Preez, from the South African Family Relief Project (SAFRP) charity, explains that residents have little chance of finding employment. Applications are frequently dismissed when employers realize the applicant lives in a white squatter camp, perpetuating the cycle of poverty.
